Normally, I don’t read texts that surround the idea of religion but I was interested in the backstory of this one. At first, I had somewhat of a hard time getting into the text but slowly I started to understand it more and feel towards it. It intrigued me that the first six pages of the text were missing, as well as over half of the text was missing. I found it interesting that the location of where it was originally discovered is a mystery but that the book was still in pretty good condition to read for it being lost over 1500 years. I also find it crazy how they found 2 more pages many years later in readable condition as well.

Like I said before, I don’t normally read religious type books nor am I a religious person, however, I did find this one pretty interesting. As most people have learned or have general knowledge of, the theory is that Jesus suffered and died on the cross for eternal life, but this text rejects that idea completely. I find this interesting because as someone who has always been a skeptic of some religious stories, this kind of proves me to believe that a lot of things are made up. Another point I found interesting was the argument about the role of leadership women had in early Christianity. Maybe because I didn’t go to church much when I was younger but I always felt like I never heard much about women having important roles besides taking care of the children.

This text sheds light to show the complete opposite of what I’ve heard before. Women did have important roles as the Savior chose Mary to show the other disciples what he had taught her. The part that frustrated me from this text was how Andrew and Peter didn’t believe the Savior chose her simply because she was a woman. She’s accused of being a liar because Jesus would never teach such advanced teachings to a woman. Unfortunately, this is where the text ends so we don’t know if the disciples ever believed her or not. On a more positive side, this text showed me that a lot of religion could be made up and/or completely false and it made me want to learn more.

Our assignment was to read The Gospel of Mary of Magdala for our FSEM Forbidden Texts.
